Brink and Jonker's love letters under the spotlight at Du Toitskloof Wines
published on:

The love letters written between the literary icons André P Brink and Ingrid Jonker take centre stage during a book discussion at Du Toitskloof Cellar outside Rawsonville on Thursday, 18 August.

Vlam in die Sneeu, one of the most controversial and important Afrikaans publications in recent times, was released in 2015 and is considered a rich, intimate and moving exposé on the two-year-long relationship between two of the most important writers in the history of Afrikaans.

Brink made the letters, which were preserved since his correspondence with Jonker began in 1963 and ended in April 1965, available for publication mere months before his death in February 2015. The publication thereof is widely regarded by critics as a treasure trove of and significant contribution to the Afrikaans word.

During the discussion of Vlam in die Sneeu, Karina Brink, who was married to the writer at the time of his passing, will talk about the publication and the legacy of both her husband and Jonker. She wil be in conversation with Emile Joubert.

Tickets for the event, which begins at 19:00 and includes dinner and a glass of wine, are available at R150 per person. Space is limited and pre-bookings can be made by emailing Elrista at or via telephone at +27.23 349 1601.
